Transition from Contraction to Rotation

The figure below shows Becky in the rotated position. It is somewhat exaggerated to bring out subtle features of the transition. Move the mouse onto the image to see the contraction position that precedes the rotation position. Move the mouse back and forth to get a feeling for the transition between the two.

A wide range of variation is possible in this transition, but the elbow's position relative to the hip should always stay the same. If the elbow becomes unstable and drifts outward, the racquet face tilts downward, and the ball hits the net or falls short.

One possible remedy is to bend at the waist to cause the elbow to point more to your opposite arm. Rotation then pulls your elbow into a position in which the racquet face is oriented properly.

Caution: Develop this motion carefully. If you are stiff, you might strain a muscle by being too aggressive. Allow several weeks for full development.
