Transition from Takeback to Contraction, Top View

In the figure below, Becky is initially in the contraction position as in the front view. Move the mouse over the figure to see the transition between these two stages.

During the transition, the body is not yet rotating, nor is the arm, although in this case we can see some shoulder rotation. It is not necessary to have this rotation, however, and you should explore the possibilities. The sense of pulling the racquet through may come through better in this figure. From the top view, the path of the racquet is clear between these two positions. The racquet is pulled straight forward by the butt toward the ball without rotating the racquet head forward. Notice that the elbow is in front of the body plane after the contraction. This is critical if the rotation stage is not to destabilize the arm.

In this set of figures, Becky's left arm is being used to sustain balance and stability and to counter an equal but opposite reaction.

Caution: Develop this motion carefully. If you are stiff, you might strain a muscle by being too aggressive. Allow several weeks for full development.
