The Forehand Punch, Part II—Western Grip

In this lesson, we take a closer look at how to produce the punch. Although the illustration is for the western forehand, the process is the same for all grips. We present video of the other grips in another lesson.

In the video, we begin with a gentle punch, and as we repeat the motion, we shorten the punch motion and increase the acceleration to the point that we are delivering a very strong punch, almost exclusively from the shoulder. This is the key to the strike. Pay special attention to the shoulder motion at the moment of the strike. In order to do this, you must practice this motion until it begins to be controllable. Watch the ball keenly and keep the motion to a minimum as you discover when to begin it.

For those wishing to race ahead, the key to utilizing the punch in the strike stage of the stroke is to build up the acceleration stage gradually, reaching maximum velocity with the execution of the punch. Also note that the punch is executed over about four inches.
