Type One High Forehand Photo Study

In a previous lesson, we introduced the Type One high forehand. In this discussion, we take a look at the stages involved in this important stroke. Since this is a specialty stroke, five stages can be combined into three. Below left is the takeback position. On the right is an animation of the three stages.

Below left is the contraction stage. The racquet is pulled straight forward, just as happens in all other strokes to some degree. There is no rotation since this is an open-stance stroke. Below right is a rollover that illustrates the transition between these two stages.

Below left is the acceleration stage, and below right is the accompanying rollover. The strike stage consists in just straightening out this stroke at the point of contact to ensure a clean strike. It might be necessary to drive the shoulder forward and straighten out the forearm to do this.

In the next lesson, we show the stages of the Type Two high forehand.
