Stages for the Forehand, Part II |

The Progressive Forehand The second stage in the development of the forehand we call the progressive stage. We use term progressive because it is a progression beyond the conventional forehand by introducing the contraction stage. The contraction stage provides some acceleration and a large component of stability, permitting this stroke to be executed at higher speeds than the conventional/classic forehand. The Shockwave video below illustrates this forehand.
Below are QuickTime videos illustrating this forehand. The key component that must be integrated is the pulling motion to start the stroke. In parallel, the student should be developing shoulder strength as discussed in Use of the Shoulder.
